Comics Journal #85 F/VF October 1983. First ever published sketches of black costume Spider-Man. Pretty tough to track down. Amazing Heroes #35 F/VF November 1983.
Once universally thought to be the first published sketches until CJ #85 was discovered. The Comic Reader #215 VF/NM December 1983.
Very early sketches with multiple poses and hints that the black background could be highlighted with red instead of white. Heroes Hotline nn VF- December 1983.
Tied with CR #215 it provided the front and back sketches that we also saw in CR #215. This book is borderline scare. Good luck tracking it down. Amazing Heroes #39 VF January 1984.The hype machine was really heating up and Amazing Heroes has to go back for another preview two months later, this time with a little more info about the upcoming miniseries. Marvel Age #12 VF March 1984. Also still a preview fan mag, most mainstream collectors point to this book as the first real appearance of the black costume. Amazing Spider-Man #252 VF/VF+ May 1984. This is a newsstand version of the very popular iconic cover where most people saw the black costume for the first time. This is a must have for any Spider-Man fan. Marvel Team-Up #141 VF May 1984. Part of a three-way tie of books that hit the newsstands at the same time, introducing the rest of the world to the brand-new black costume Spider-Man. Spectacular Spider-Man #90 VF May 1984. This is an often forgotten book that ties ASM #252 and MTU #141 with the same release date. They all hit the newsstands at the same time. Secret Wars #6 VF+ October 1984. We finally get to see the origin of the costume. In this issue the second incarnation of Spider-Woman appears in the shadows and is wearing the alien Symbiote. Secret Wars #7 VF- November 1984. First full appearance of the new Spider-Woman Julia Carpenter. Spider-Woman reveals herself to the superheroes and shes wearing an all-black costume. Spider-Man finds the machine that produces the black costume. Secret Wars #8 VF December 1984. This is the issue with the other iconic cover. This is newsstand and a pretty sharp looking book. Just a couple of creases on the spine with very sharp corners. Transformers #3 VF January 1985.
