This is a crib quilt from the first half of the 19th century. There are fifty-nine 2 1/4" turkey red eight pointed stars appliqued into 3 1/2" squares of muslin. There is a wonderful 7/8 turkey red roller print that is used as sashing between each star and borders the entire quilt. There is NO popping of the turkey red prints. There are half stars appliqued along each edge and tiny quarter stars appliqued in each of the four corners.
It is all hand quilted at 7-8 spi and hand appliqued with tiny 15 spi. The edge is finished with a knife edge binding stitched around with tiny stitches (see picture 7). There is light overall toning on the front and heavy storage stains on the back. There is one mend in the muslin in one of the blocks on the front (see picture 6) and one mend on the back (picture 11). There are two one inch areas on one edge that has a slit in the turkey red and the knife edge is open (see picture 12).
The age, reduced scale design, period turkey red prints, and graphic quality make this a one-of-a-kind treasure.
