This is a hand carved, one-of-a-kind, original sandstone arch created and signed by Jack Cluff, a well known sculptor and western artist who lives in Gunnison, Utah. He is the creator of the process that reveals each arch and is a master at reading the rock to find the most interesting design. He uses sandstone from his claim near Snowflake, Arizona for his work and creates each piece as he is influenced by the natural patternsof the stone. The colors are completely natural and the distinctive dark brown lines that you see forming ridges and ledges in the arch is manganese dioxide. It is same mineral that produces the desert varnish streaking down the canyon walls in the Southwest and was used as a canvas by the ancient Fremont and Anasazi Indians to record their stories as petroglyphs.

You will receive the exact same arch that you see in these pictures which were shot outside in direct sunlight. The arch is 7.75 tall. The bottom is 7.25 across and has been cut to produce a flat, stable base. It weighs 2 pounds 15.8 ounces. You will be the first owner.

For the geologists looking at this listing, the rock, comes from of the Toroweap formation which is a prominent member of the upper Grand Canyon sequence and can be found sandwiched between the Kaibab and Coconino formations. It is a mix of sandstone, limestone and gypsum that was deposited in warm, shallow seas 250 million years ago during the Permian Period.

The warm, colorful banding patterns are completely natural and were produced when iron minerals present in the ground water permeated the rock.
