History: Traditional dress is worn by all Butanese nationals in public, by decree of their hereditary monarch, in the interests of preserving Bhutanese culture in the face of the changes brought about by the opening of the country in the late 20th century. The Export of traditional Bhutanese Arts, Crafts and Antiques are strictly controlled to ensure the preservation of Bhutanese Culture and Arts. The design of these traditional Bhutanese kira is based on Ancient asian art and its made of silk. Woven from native fibers such as wild silk, cotton, nettle, wool and yak hair, they are colored with both natural and synthetic dyes. Often traded with neighboring countries, the older fabrics were integral to the Kingdoms history and culture. Often they were imbued with complex religious and social meanings. If you turn this kira over, you can see the dangling ends of the silk threads on the reverse side.

Its possible that they were colored with synthetic dyes, which were introduced into Bhutan around 1920. Unlike the indigo background, they show no evidence of fading. The fabric pulsates with triangles and diamonds, like endlessly repeating mirrorsexcept that each image is a little (or a lot) different from the others. Some motifs seem to presage the optical illusions of Victor Varsarely. Its a one of a kind, not replicated anywhere.
