This museum specimen shows all the characteristics of the earliest Navajo silver work. The lack of stamp work on the buttons, which are simple hammered silver coins with the most basic chisel and file designs, along with the wear to the tips of the flap buttons, mark this as a rare and intact example. The use of native tanned leathers and early cotton twine are also key characteristics. The two pump drilled turquoise tabs are of a deep aged green color as are the pump drilled heishi beads suspended from the leather top flap. Also present is a pump drilled blue-green "sing" stone attached to the shoulder strap denoting attendance at some sacred event, dance or ceremony. Of particular note is the large chiseled and filed central 2 domed concho formed from a single silver dollar. Several Native repairs to bag and strap over the years of use. The piece, though missing one high domed button on the strap (where the turquoise stone is attached) is in decent original condition with a lustrous softness and patina that comes only from years of use. For display purposes only, due to age and original native materials used, but absolutely intact as indicated in the description and /or shown in the listing photos.
Has the original museum tag from the 1940's. Bag is 5 1/2" x 7" with 3/4 high domed coin silver flap beads. 85 1/2 simple domed coin silver strap buttons with soldered copper loops. One of the best of its kind. Century Navajo bandolier bags like these are just not found any more in today's market or auctions. Normal wear, tear and losses commensurate with age of artifact. Photographs often are the greatest testament to actual condition. Please study the pictures carefully as they are the greater part of the description and hereby incorporated into the description, specifically with regard to condition.
