EXTREMELY RARE- FLOWN/TESTED - N. APOLLO # 009/ A201- 1966 - CSM. HEAT SHIELD - AVCOAT 5026-39 SAMPLE - IN LUCITE BLOCK.

This superb clear lucite block embedded (size 4" x 3" x 1 1/2) tested and or flown? Blated (charred) original honeycomb - AVCOAT 5026- 39 Heatshield. (size 2"L x 1 3/4" H x 3/4T) is in great condition. It has the hand engraved name of an Ames Research (ARC) Aerospace Technologist and the ARC -JET FACILITY.

In a separate plexiglass block are the original- old hand typed test results (39) RUN # - 377. Heating Rate 96 Btu/ft sec. Test Time - 60.3 sec.

Material - Avcoat 5026- 39 HCG. The Sample as seen thru the block has a convex honeycomb ablated (charred/burnt) side and the other showing the internal layers of material and the number 39 written on it. The block of lucite has great optical clarity and some mild surface scratches. In February 1966, NASA launched the unmanned first time combination of the Apollo 009 Command Service Module (Block 1) on Top of the Saturn 1B(A201) on a suborbital flight. It was a success and proved the Heatshield made of AV 5026 could survive re-entry in low earth orbit. It was under direction of Johnson Manned Space Center Houston. The Ames Jet Facility (ARC) Langley Virginia was lead contractor on the development/testing the thermal protection system aka heat shield. Engraved on the front of the block in his own writing is the name of one of the Langley Ames Aerospace Technology Team, involved in the TPS system at that time. He retired in 2000, died in 2008. These facts were verified by family members. This material paved our way for many Apollo Missions and to the Moon and beyond.

In1967 the Block 1 was replaced with Block 2 CSM due to a Fire in the Block 1 which Killed 3 ASTRONAUTS. The 009 Block 1 was restored at the University of Nebraska and can now be seen at the Air and Space Museum in Ashland, Nebraska. The Avcoat material was never used in the Shuttle but reformulated to be more eco-friendly and is being used for current and future Orion Missions.
